Strength-Based Therapy
When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy to focus on your weaknesses. You forget your strengths, things you’ve accomplished. And sometimes, you need to be reminded of it. Compassion-based Therapy does exactly that.
Strength-Based Therapy (SBT) is a therapeutic approach that shifts the focus from what is wrong to what is right with you. It focuses on your strengths, abilities, and best qualities to change your worldview. It is client-led and centered that changes the view from “what needs to be fixed?” to “what’s already good with you?”
Rooted in positive psychology, SBT emerged in the late 1950s as a response to traditional deficit-focused models of therapy. It was developed and refined by Donald Clifton, named the father of strength-based therapy and the grandfather of positive psychology by the American Psychological Association.
How Does Strength-Based Therapy Work?
Together with your therapist, you’ll explore the talents, abilities, and inner resources that have shaped your journey so far. You don’t ignore challenges but view them from a different perspective. They will help you identify patterns of success and resilience you might not have noticed before.
You become more self-aware and confident in showing you how your strengths have guided you through tough times and can continue to do so. Being a client-led therapy, it works just as efficiently when delivered virtually.
After every session, you leave feeling encouraged and uplifted, ready to embrace your strengths. Most clients find that 8-12 sessions are enough to achieve meaningful progress. As your therapist in Ontario, I also provide practical exercises to support your growth between sessions and after therapy ends, so you continue building momentum on your own.
