As the name suggests, Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) is a positive and forward-looking form of psychotherapy that concentrates on what you want to achieve rather than on the problems that made them seek help. It was developed by Steve de Shazer, Insoo Kim Berg, and their colleagues at Family Therapy Center in the late 1970s.

It is a short-term goal-focused evidence-based therapeutic approach that helps you identify and harness your strengths and resources to build the future you desire. The aim is to quickly identify practical solutions that you can use in different parts of your life. This method has been effective for both individuals and couples, helping with everything from daily struggles to major life stresses.

How Does Solution Focused Therapy Work?

In a Solution Focused Therapy session, you start by envisioning a dream future and plan out small, practical steps to make it a reality. As your virtual psychotherapist in Ontario, I will play the role of a guide as you, the expert, take a look at your current problems and find solutions for them. Together, we’ll look for what was different about times when those problems were absent or insignificant. We’ll also focus on your  strengths and resources, which you already possess if you make positive changes happen.

During our therapy sessions I will ask you questions like

  • On a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 is the worst the problem has ever been and 10 represents the problem being completely resolved, where are you today?
  • What would you like to see change in your life? Can you describe a day in your life when the problem is no longer an issue?
  • If a miracle happened while you were sleeping tonight and the issue you’re facing was solved, what would be the first sign tomorrow morning that tells you life has improved?

Between our sessions, you’ll have some exercises to do that will give you a closer look into your thoughts and feelings. Keep in mind, this therapy is for anyone eager to make changes in their life. So, be ready to take charge.
