Every family and marriage experiences conflict at some point. Misunderstandings, life transitions, miscommunications, or unresolved issues happen from time to time. But the good news is, with effort and support, you can work through them and find a healthier path forward.

Developed by physician Salvador Minuchin in the 1960s and '70s, Family/Marital Therapy combines individual and couple or family therapy to understand and resolve issues. Pioneers like Murray Bowen and Minuchin emphasized how family dynamics influence individual behaviors and emotions. It focuses on rebuilding trust and communication by working on communication, coping skills, and constructive problem-solving.

How Does Family/Marital Therapy Work?

During the first session, your therapist will ask questions about your family or relationship dynamics, including any conflicts, communication patterns, and shared goals. Then, they’ll offer a game plan that includes both individual and couple or family therapy. You may be asked for formal assessments or personal observations depending on your goals.

Therapists often use structured approaches and evidence-based techniques, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotional Focused Therapy, or Solution-Focused Therapy. For example, if you have communication issues, they will include modeling and role-playing exercises.

Beyond immediate family, grandparents, uncles and aunts, friends, and caregivers can also participate in this therapy. When looking for a family therapist, who has at least two years or 3,000 clinical hours of experience in family or couple counselling.
