Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) is a type of collaborative psychotherapy that places your emotions at the heart of the healing process. This method is based on the belief that emotions play a primary role in decision-making and behaviour. EFT is based on three thought processes - emotional awareness is important to make good decisions, not paying attention to how you feel can cause problems, and if you keep ignoring your feelings, it might make it harder for you to deal with them later on.

How Does Emotion Focused Therapy Work?

EFT is a structured approach that empowers you to become an expert on your own emotions. Changes in emotions are necessary for lasting psychological transformation. Our sessions will follow a three-step process –  awareness, regulation, and transformation of emotion. You will learn to differentiate your emotions as adaptive and maladaptive.

 As your therapist, I help you become more aware of your emotional states and encourage you to experience and express feelings in a safe and supportive environment. Next, we work on strategies for regulating intense emotions, so you don’t feel overwhelmed. You will learn how to feel emotions and approach them with mindfulness and acceptance.

Finally, we assess maladaptive emotions and find strategies to turn them into more adaptive emotional responses. During our sessions, you will often revisit past experiences to heal emotional wounds and reframe negative patterns of thinking and feeling.
